Liverpool host Arsenal in Carabao Cup fourth round showdown
5085

For the second straight season, Liverpool will host Arsenal in the Carabao Cup at Anfield. Their meeting in 2019-20 was an epic affair that finished 5-5 and needed penalties to sort out the team that progressed. Liverpool won on penalties a season ago.

Now, Jurgen Klopp’s team are aiming for a second win in the same week against Arsenal at Anfield. The Reds defeated the Gunners on Monday night in the Premier League, 3-1.

Liverpool played Arsenal off the park at times, although the Gunners were dangerous on the counter-attack, they failed to get through the opposition defence. Klopp’s Liverpool progressed past Lincoln City 7-2 in the last round.

Klopp has the deepest squad Liverpool have had in the Premier League era. He can select a completely different XI than the team that faced Arsenal on Monday night.

Mikel Arteta doesn’t have the same luxury on Thursday night. He may select a number of players that featured against Liverpool earlier in the week.

Liverpool are unbeaten in 13 of their last 15 games in all competitions versus Arsenal. The Reds have posted a 6W-7D-2L record during that 15-game run.

Eight straight games between the teams finished with both teams finding the back of the net. Ten of the last 12 matches between the clubs in all competitions finished with over 2.5 goals scored.

Arteta’s options in defence are limited due to injury. Shkodran Mustafi, Emile Smith Rowe, Cedric Soares, Sokratis, and Calum Chambers are all injured. Soares and Sokratis could make the team in time for the game. Striker Gabriel Martinelli is ruled out.

Klopp is without new signing Thiago Alcantara. He is out of action until after the October international break. Joel Matip is also out until mid-October. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is ruled out while Jordan Henderson is a doubt.

Henderson is likely to be kept out due to Liverpool’s quality of depth. Curtis Jones, Naby Keita, Xherdan Shaqiri, Marko Gruijic, Georgio Wijnaldum, Fabinho, and James Milner could all be included in the team. No Premier League team are as deep as Liverpool this term.

Arsenal came through a very difficult third round game against Leicester City, 2-0. The Gunners faced a far more difficult team in the third round than Liverpool. However, the Reds showed they can defeat Arsenal at home.

Even rotating the side, Klopp’s team will be difficult to defeat. Thursday night’s game should see both teams score and over 2.5 goals scored once more when the teams meet.
