The 2020/21 UEFA Champions League has reached the crucial playoff stage. The winners of the playoff ties will each progress to the group stages of the competition which not only brings plenty of glamour but also a major boost to the finances. On Tuesday the 22nd of September we have the first leg between Maccabi Tel Aviv and RB Salzburg at the Netanya Stadium.
The hosts are aiming to qualify for the Champions League group stages for the second time in their history. You can trace their progress this season all the way back to the first qualifying round and Maccabi Tel Aviv defeated Riga of Latvia 2-0 at home. Into the second qualifying round and Maccabi Tel Aviv were drawn away against Sūduva of Lithuania and came away with a convincing 3-0 victory.
The third qualifying round was always going to be a tougher test and Maccabi Tel Aviv faced Dynamo Brest of Belarus at home. The hosts failed to make the breakthrough in the first half but opened the scoring from the penalty spot after 50 minutes and saw out the game to progress to the playoff stage.
Maccabi Tel Aviv have kept a clean sheet in each of their 3 matches in the Champions League this season. However, when coming up against stronger opposition at home in the competition they have struggled. In matches against Basel, Dynamo Kiev, Porto, Chelsea and CFR Cluj, Maccabi Tel Aviv have conceded 2 more goals on four occasions.
RB Salzburg will be playing in the Champions League for the first time this season having qualified directly for the playoff round. However, they have played two Austrian Bundesliga matches this season, winning them both comfortably to top the table. It would be a shock if anyone managed to finish above RB Salzburg in the Austrian Bundesliga this season.
RB Salzburg join their opponents in attempting to qualify for the group stage of the Champions League for the second time in the history. You only have to go back to last season to find the last time they played in the group stage of the competition. They were drawn in a difficult group including defending champions, Liverpool, Napoli and Genk. RB Salzburg managed to win 2 of their 6 games plus put up a strong fight against Liverpool at Anfield.
Trends show that in 5 of RB Salzburg's last 6 Champions League games both teams scored and they have managed to score 2 or goals in 4 of their last 6 Champions League matches.
Team news and Maccabi Tel Aviv do not have any major injury or suspension concerns ahead of the game. Nick Blackman will be hoping to start in attack with support from Dan Biton.
RB Salzburg will travel without three players due to injury with Oumar Solet, Youba Diarra and Zlatko Junuzovic the players to miss out. Paston Daka will play up-front and the exciting Dominik Szoboszlai is a player to watch in midfield.
Maccabi Tel Aviv know the importance of keeping a clean sheet and taking a lead with them to the second leg. However, keeping out this RB Salzburg team is going to prove difficult and we expect to see an away victory with both teams scoring.
