Young Boys to progress to UCL playoff round with win versus Midtjylland

Swiss Super League reigning champions Young Boys will clash with Danish champions Midtjylland. The teams will meet in the champions path with the winner booking their place in the playoff round.

The clubs are just two steps away from the Champions League group stage proper.

Both Young Boys and Midtjylland are in the Champions path of the Champions League qualifying rounds.

The Swiss champions entered the Champions League qualifying rounds in the second qualifying round. They defeated Klaksvik 3-1 at home thanks to goals from Jean-Pierre Nsame, Miralem Sulejmani, and Nicolas Ngamaleu.

Klaksvik made the game interesting late on, pulling back a goal in the 79th minute, but Ngamaleu’s goal three minutes later killed things off.

Midtjylland also began their Champions League qualifying in the second round. The Danish champs eliminated Ludogorets 1-0 courtesy of a goal from Junior Brumado. The goal didn’t come until the 77th minute due to the difficulty of breaking down the Bulgarians.

Midtjylland will have a much stronger opponent on Wednesday night when they host Young Boys at MCH Arena. The two clubs have played twice previously. Those games came in the Europa League in 2012-13 and saw the away team claim wins in both fixtures.

The Swiss side won the first leg away in Denmark 3-0, scoring on both sides of the break. Midtjylland returned the favour in Bern with a 2-0 away win. Young Boys progressed on the away goals rule.

Midtjylland started their domestic campaign last weekend. It didn’t go to plan as they fell 2-0 to Soenderjysk. Young Boys, on the other hand, have not started the Swiss Super League season. They won’t be in action until this weekend.

Young Boys were eliminated from the Champions League at the playoff round last term. Red Star Belgrade knocked them out of the competition on away goals, 3-3.

Midtjylland played in the Europa League qualifying rounds in 2019-20. They too were knocked out but at the third qualifying round. Scotland’s Rangers eliminated them.

The last time these teams met, the away team dominated the fixture. Wednesday’s game will be played at Midtjylland’s MCH Arena. Young Boys should come through the one-off tie with an away victory.

With neither team playing many games to prepare for the fixture and the importance of the tie, the match should be low scoring and close. Expect under 2.5 goals as the Swiss champions win to progress.
