Maccabi Tel Aviv Favourites to Reach Playoffs

We have reached the third qualifying round of the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League. On Wednesday the 16th of September there is a fixture between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Dinamo Brest at the Netanya Stadium, with the winners going through to the playoffs where they will meet Red Bull Salzburg.

Maccabi Tel Aviv come into the match having defeated Sūduva of Lithuania 3-0 away from home in the second qualifying round. Having opened the scoring in the 30th minute, Maccabi Tel Aviv went on to add two more goals in the final 16 minutes of the game to secure their place in this round of the competition.

It was their second fixture in the Champions League qualifying process this season, following a match at home against Riga. Maccabi Tel Aviv required two penalties to win the game 2-0, both of which were scored in the second half.

However, they have not made a great start to their domestic League campaign in Israel and have picked up just a single point from their opening two matches. Having been defeated 2-1 at home by Maccabi Petah Tikva, Maccabi Tel Aviv were held to a 2-2 draw at Bnei Yehuda, conceding an equaliser in the 89th minute.

Trends show that in each of their 3 Champions League games, Maccabi Tel Aviv have scored at least 2 goals.

Dinamo Brest will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of compatriots BATE Borisov by qualifying for the group stage of the Champions League. They entered the first qualifying round of the competition this season with a tough looking home fixture against Astana of Kazakhstan. In what was a hugely entertaining match, Dinamo Brest went 4-0 up after only 37 minutes and despite conceding 3 goals themselves, they added 2 more to win the game 6-3.

The result was somewhat of a shock and in the second round Dinamo Brest were once again drawn at home, this time against Bosnian club FK Sarajevo. Dinamo Brest opened the scoring after only 3 minutes and the fans were hoping for another goal fest from their team. However, FK Sarajevo struck back with the equaliser on 34 minutes to set up an interesting second half. It was Dinamo Brest who found the winning goal, scoring 5 minutes after half time to win the match 2-1.

Since the victory over FK Sarajevo, Dinamo Brest have played twice in the Belarus Premier League, winning both games. However, trends show they have won only 2 of their last 6 away games and have kept just a single clean sheet across those 6 matches.

Team news and Maccabi Tel Aviv should be at full strength for the game without any new injury or suspension concerns. Striker Nick Blackman is a key player, having scored 3 goals in the Champions League this season.

Dinamo Brest will also be close to full strength and can call upon forwards Mikhail Gordeychuk and Abdoulaye Diallo.

Dinamo Brest have done well to reach this stage of the Champions League but it could be the end of the road for the Belarus club. Maccabi Tel Aviv have home advantage and could come out on top by scoring 2 or more goals and keeping a clean sheet.
