Deportivo Alavés vs Real Betis - 13/09/2020

The chaos of Real Betis continued in the offseason as the club once again hired a new manager to oversee the team. Former Manchester City and West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini took the reins from Rubi after just one season in the job.
Six managers have taking control of Real Betis’s first team since 2016. The Green and White will hope Pellegrini can deliver sustainability for a change.
Deportivo Alaves hope to start Pellegrini’s time at Real Betis with a loss. Coach Pablo Machin’s team ended the 2019-20 campaign in 16th place on 39 points. They were just one place and two points behind Real Betis in the final La Liga table.
The Glorious Ones have had a good head to head record against Real Betis over the last few seasons. Since the 2016-17 La Liga campaign, Deportivo have posted a 3W-3D-2L record.
Five of their last eight matches ended with both teams finding the back of the net. Three of the eight games ended with both teams not scoring goals.
According to the latest news out of Real Betis, a player tested positive this week for COVID-19 and will now be quarantined. The player’s name has not been released.
Pellegrini will be without a handful of players in addition to the player that tested positive with COVID-19. Juanmi, Antonio Sanabria, Victor Ruiz, Dani Martin, and Victor Camarasa are all doubts to play due to injury.
Real Betis’s leading scorer last season was Loren Moron with 10 goals. His expected goals total was 7.66 and tallied 2.28 shots per 90 minutes in La Liga. Pellegrini will hope the striker can find the back of the net with the same regularity.
Midfielder Nabil Fekir scored seven times and added four assists in 32 league appearances. He is one of the club’s most promising players going into the new season.
Deportivo Alaves are in their first season under Machin. The club allowed a number of players to leave in the offseason. Those departures were due to loans expiring.
Machin will put his hopes in striker Joselu, who scored 11 times in 2019-20. One of those goals came against Real Betis away last term. Ex-Arsenal player Lucas Perez also added 11 league goals.
Deportivo Alaves’s scoring was poor but Joselu and Perez ensured they stayed in La Liga. Sunday’s game should see Deportivo continue their good form against Real Betis.
Machin’s time at Deportivo Alaves will get off to a good start with a win versus Real Betis. Issues will continue with the Green and White as Pellegrini’s debut ends in defeat.
