Group B1 leaders Austria welcome Romania to Worthersee Stadion on Monday night as the two countries face off in the Nations League.
Austria beat Norway 2-1 on Friday to kick off their 2020/21 campaign with a win, while Romania are third after being held to a 1-1 draw by Northern Ireland.
It’s fair to say that Austria deserved their victory over Norway. Michael Gregoritsch and Marcel Sabitzer scored either side of half time, before Erling Haaland netted a consolation for the hosts.
However, Austria finished the game with 60% possession and managed to register a whopping 17 shots (6 on target) to Norway’s 3 (1 on target).
Austria came into that game having lost just one of their previous eight games – a run that saw them qualify for Euro 2021 by finishing second in Group G behind Poland.
The Austrians saw off Slovenia, North Macedonia, Lativia and Israel during that period but lost to Latvia in their final qualifying game, so it was imperative that they returned to winning ways on Friday.
On the other hand, Romania can count themselves pretty unfortunate to have come away from their game against Northern Ireland with just a point.
Geroge Puscas gave Romania the lead midway through the first half, and despite the visitors having Josh Magennis sent off before half time, Gavin Whyte netted an 86th-minute equaliser.
Remarkably, Romania recorded 73% possession on Friday and notched up 18 shots (9 on target), but they were ultimately made to pay for their wastefulness.
Romania are now without a win in their last four games, following defeats to Sweden and Spain at the end of their Euro 2021 qualifying campaign.
Head-to-head: These two sides have faced each other nine times over the years, with five draws coming in that time.
Romania have claimed three wins, while Austria have clinched two, although Austria are unbeaten in their previous four meetings with Romania (1 win, 3 draws).
Team news: Austria lost Martin Hinteregger to injury last time out, so Aleksandar Dragovic is expected to take his place in the starting line-up.
As for Romania, Alexandru Cretu could start after replacing Ianis Hagi in the draw against Northern Ireland, although there are no injury worries for the Romanians.
This fixture has produced plenty of draws over the years. In fact, three of the previous four meetings between these two nations have ended level, with two of them finishing goalless.
