PSG and Bayern Munich clash for Lisbon Champions League final

It’s been a crazy season to say the least. But on Sunday, August 23, PSG and Bayern Munich finally bring the curtain down on the 2019/20 campaign, as Estadio da Luz hosts the UEFA Champions League final.

Believe it or not, this is PSG’s first-ever Champions League final, whil Bayern Munich are competing in their eleventh – only Real Madrid have reached more.

PSG kicked off their Champions League campaign with an impressive 3-0 victory over Real Madrid on Matchday 1, eventually finishing five points clear at the top of Group A, with five wins and a draw to their name.

The French side lost their Round of 16 first leg with Borussia Dortmund 2-1 but turned things around with a 2-0 win in the second leg.

After the lay-off, Thomas Tuchel’s side beat Atalanta 2-1 in the quarter-finals before booking their place in the final with a 3-0 victory over RB Leipzig.

It’s fair to say that PSG deserve their place in the final. The Parisians enjoyed 58% possession in their semi-final and racked up 14 shots, nine of which were on target.

But can Kylian Mbappe and co. go all the way? One thing’s for sure – PSG will have to be at their very best to stop a rampant Bayern Munich team.

Bayern won all six of their group games to finish eight points clear at the top of Group B, scoring 24 goals and conceding just five along the way.

Hansi Flick’s men then crushed Chelsea 7-1 on aggregate in the Round of 16 before utterly demolishing Barcelona 8-2 (yes, 8-2!) in the quarter-finals.

Remarkably, Bayern registered 26 shots (14 on target) against Barcelona, with seven different players getting on the scoresheet.

A Serge Gnabry double, along with yet another goal from the ruthless Robert Lewandowski, fired Bayern to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Lyon in the semi-finals.

Lewandowski now has 55 goals in 45 games in all competitions this season, with 15 goals and six assists in just nine Champions League appearances. Could he be the different between the two teams?

Head-to-head: PSG and Bayern have met eight times in the Champions League, with PSG claiming five wins and Bayern winning three.

The two sides met in the group stage back in 2017. PSG won the first game 3-0 before Bayern Munich won the reverse fixture 3-1.

Teams news: Layvin Kurzawa is the only injury doubt for PSG. The left-back has missed the last couple of games with a thigh problem.

Bayern Munich have no injury concerns heading into Sunday’s final, so Hansi Flick is likely to stick with the same starting XI that saw off Barcelona and RB Leipzig so comfortably.

PSG have done extremely well to make it to their very first Champions League final, but there is a sense that nobody can stop Bayern Munich this season.
