On Thursday evening, NSI Runavik of the Faroes Islands host Barry Town in the Europa League preliminary rounds, as both teams look to move on to the next stage of the competition.

The home side are experienced campaigners in the early stages of the Europa League, having featured in the competition in the previous five years. Unfortunately for the team from the Faroe Islands they have struggled to make an impact in Europe’s secondary competition.

In fact, they have failed to win any of their last eight Europa League games, suffering seven defeats in the process. Poor defensive displays have contributed to NSI’s poor European results, as they have conceded at least two goals in 12 of their last 13 matches.

NSI have only ever won one home game in the Europa League in 11 attempts. The home side head into this clash on the back of four home defeats in their previous six matches in European football’s secondary competition.

Unlike the home team, Barry Town have not featured regularly in the Europa League in recent seasons. In fact, they have featured in the competition in just two seasons in the last two decades. Their first appearance way back in 2000 ended with a 5-0 aggregate defeat by Boavista.

More recently the Welsh side exited the competition at the first time of asking last season, as they suffered a 4-0 aggregate defeat against Northern Irish outfit Cliftonville.

Gavin Chesterfield’s team have to do what Barry have failed to do in the competition, that’s score a goal to progress to the first qualifying round.
