Western Utd and Melbourne City to both score in all-Victorian clash

It’s a tale of two relatively new franchise clubs in the Australian A-League to round off the regular season when Western United take on Melbourne City at the Netstrata Jubilee Stadium in Sydney with little actually riding on this game apart from local pride and for Western United to try and finish in 3rd spot.

Both teams are assured of their places in the play-off series, with Melbourne City already booked in the Finals play-offs following their 2nd place finish, but they’ll no doubt be keen to teach the ‘new kids on the block’ a few lessons here.

However, new franchise club, Western United, have made quite an impression in this their first ever season in the A-League, and they’ll be hard to stop here as they’ve racked up six wins from their last seven matches in their bid for a 3rd place finish.

The fact that the fixtures have been moved to Sydney has made little difference to Mark Rudan’s side as they’ve dealt with Perth Glory and A-League preliminary champions, Sydney FC, with 2-0 and 2-1 wins respectively.

Striker, Besart Berisha (19 goals) has been at the forefront of Western United’s successful campaign to date and he’s the most likely to notch here for the newcomers.

Onto Melbourne City, and the runners-up to Sydney FC in the regular season have also made impressive strides in their relatively short footballing history in this Australian top flight, not least in replacing crosstown rivals, Melbourne Victory as the new powerhouse in Melbourne.

City have lost just one of their last seven matches in the A-League as they’ve done just enough to stave off the challenges from the chasing pack such as Wellington Phoenix, Brisbane Roar and indeed, Wednesday’s opponents, Western United, who have flown under the radar for the majority of this season.

Victories against Brisbane Roar, Perth Glory, Central Coast Mariners and most impressive of all, a 2-0 win against Sydney FC in effectively Sydney’s backyard prove that Melbourne City are also a force to be reckoned with under manager, Erick Mombaerts.

However, this is effectively another away match for both teams here and Melbourne City haven’t had things all their own way on the road this term; indeed, City have managed just two wins out of their last seven matches on their travels, but nevertheless, goals have featured on a regular basis.

In fact, six of City’s last seven away matches have resulted in both teams scoring and with Berisha in red-hot goalscoring form for Western United and Melbourne City possessing the likes of MacLaren (20 goals), both teams look set to hit the back of the net in this clash too.
