Liverpool won a thriller against Chelsea in midweek 5-3 and lifted the Premier League trophy on a magical night at Anfield. Now, the Reds head into the final game of the campaign seeking a win against Newcastle United.
Jurgen Klopp could rotate his side for the final day of the season allowing some of his younger players to get some time on the pitch. Even if he does rotate the side, Klopp will expect his team claim a big final day win to give the side momentum for September’s start of the next term.
The Reds are unbeaten in six straight game versus Newcastle United. Their last four games all ended in victory and Klopp will expect a fifth straight win against the Magpies.
Newcastle United have dipped greatly since achieving safety. They are winless in five straight games with three of those ending losses.
Steve Bruce’s team have been far better at home than on the road in 2019-20. It is Newcastle United’s home form that has kept them in the league and away from the relegation zone.
The Magpies have taken 26 of 54 points possible at St. James’ Park. Five of their last six games in the league at St. James’ Park finished without a loss.
Goal scoring has been a problem for the club. Just 19 goals have been tallied by Newcastle United at home. The team are a defensive side having conceded just 18 times on their own turf.
When these sides met at Anfield earlier this season, Liverpool won 3-1 coming from behind to claim the victory. Jetro Willems opened the scoring for Newcastle United in the seventh minute with a screamer. Sadio Mane then scored twice on either side of a Mohamed Salah strike.
Klopp still has long-term injuries with captain Jordan Henderson and centre-back Joel Matip both being on the sidelines. The win over Chelsea saw the return of midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri and saw the continued growth of Curtis Jones, Neco Williams, and Takumi Minamino.
Bruce still has a long list of players suffering from injuries. The manager is waiting on fitness tests for Sean Longstaff, Isaac Hayden, and Emil Krath. Meanwhile, Jamaal Laschelles and Fabian Schar are set to miss out on the game.
Even if Klopp rotates his side, Liverpool should once again claim a victory against Newcastle United. The match should mirror their previous game this term with both teams scoring and over 2.5 goals tallied.
