Napoli will be eager to bounce back from their recent and damaging 2-1 defeat away from home at Parma last time out in Serie A, when they play host to Sassuolo at their Stadio San Paolo on Saturday evening.
This recent loss ended a promising run of five matches without defeat in Serie A but the hosts return to the more familiar surroundings of their Stadio San Paolo for this clash against Sassuolo, and with 6th placed AC Milan playing high-flying Atalanta, Napoli will sense an opportunity to make up ground here.
Following a worrying sequence of four straight defeats at home from early December through to mid-January, Napoli have since staged a recovery at home as they’ve registered five wins from their subsequent seven matches, and it’s this momentum which has helped maintain their push for a possible top six finish.
Victories over Juventus, Torino, SPAL, Roma and Udinese should provide the necessary impetus for Napoli to bounce back with a win here against a Sassuolo outfit who have little left to play for.
Onto Sassuolo then, and although the visitors occupy one league place below Napoli, sitting in 8th place in Serie A, they find themselves eight points adrift of their hosts and a further 11 points behind 6th placed AC Milan.
And with just three matches of the Italian top flight season remaining, Sassuolo are out of the picture in terms of a European spot for next season.
Sassuolo also head into this clash against Napoli on the back of a loss which came in the shape of a 2-1 defeat at home to an in-form AC Milan outfit which followed back-to-back draws with Juventus and Cagliari.
A previous flurry of four wins on the trot in Serie A for Sassuolo from early July to the middle of the month provided the visitors with a brief glimmer of hope as they collected wins against Fiorentina, Lecce, Bologna and Lazio, but the subsequent draws and defeat put paid to hopes of a top six finish.
Nevertheless, Sassuolo do bring a threat on the road here as they’re unbeaten in their last five matches on their travels but with the hopes of European football now dashed, Napoli should be the hungrier of the two outfits and collect the three points here.
