9th placed Hellas Verona have seemingly little to play for ahead of this upcoming clash against high-flying Atalanta as the hosts sit mid-table and nine points adrift of Napoli and the top six, and they’re unlikely to suddenly put together a flurry of wins.
Verona come into this encounter having failed to win any of their last four matches in Serie A, a run of matches that have resulted in defeats to Roma and Brescia along with just picking up single points in draws with Inter Milan and Fiorentina, which means that the hosts have picked up just two points from the possible 12 on offer.
However, Verona shouldn’t be written off too soon as the hosts have suffered just one defeat from their previous eight matches on home turf at their Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi which includes five wins, so they may fancy their chances of getting something from this clash.
Verona will be up against in-form Atalanta though, so the prospect of goals looks appealing here especially as seven of Verona’s last eight matches at home have resulted in over 2.5 goals.
Onto Atalanta, and the visitors moved up into 2nd spot following their crushing 6-2 victory at home over hapless Brescia during the week which became Atalanta’s tenth win in 11 matches in Serie A and they look a formidable unit right now.
Momentum certainly appears to be on the side of Atalanta here as the visitors have swept aside their opposition in recent times and goals have also featured in the large majority of their matches as eight of these last 11 matches have also seen three goals or more scored.
In addition, Atalanta have won five of their last six matches on the road and these victories include putting seven goals not just once but twice against the likes of Torino 7-0 and Lecce 7-2 while they’ve scored a total of 22 goals from these last six matches on their travels overall.
The bigger picture shows that 12 of Atalanta’s 16 away matches in this season’s Serie A campaign have resulted in over 2.5 goals and the free-scoring visitors don’t look like letting up anytime soon with the likes of goalscoring midfielder Ilicic (15 goals) along with forwards Muriel (17 goals) and Zapata (10 goals) in their attacking ranks.
