Watford aiming to maintain momentum against Newcastle
2262

Watford will be aiming to build on their first win since the restart when Newcastle United visit Vicarage Road on Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets are still just one place clear of the drop zone, although a vital victory over Norwich last time out has put some daylight between them and the bottom three.

Following a draw with Leicester in their first game after the lay-off, Watford suffered three straight defeats at the hands of Burnley, Southampton and Chelsea.

Things were looking bleak for Nigel Pearson’s men, but they managed to come from behind to beat bottom club Norwich, thanks to Danny Welbeck’s stunning overhead kick winner.

Only Bournemouth and Norwich have scored fewer Premier League goals than Watford this season, although the Hornet’s defensive recorded is far superior to that of their relegation rivals.

Meanwhile, Newcastle’s six-game unbeaten run was brought to an abrupt end by a ruthless Manchester City on Wednesday.

The Magpies managed just a single shot on target and saw 25% possession as Man City racked up a whopping 26 shots in a 5-0 thrashing at the Etihad Stadium.

Newcastle drew with Burnley and beat Southampton before the campaign was put on hold and hit the ground running after the resumption.

Victories over Sheffield United and Bournemouth, along with draws against Aston Villa and West Ham, saw the Magpies secure mid-table safety. But they were quickly brought back down to earth with a bump by Man City.

Still, Steve Bruce must be given huge credit for his achievements this season, especially considering the ongoing off-field issues at the club.

Head-to-head: Watford and Newcastle played out a 1-1 draw earlier in the campaign, while their meeting before that also ended with the same scoreline.

Looking at the bigger picture, Watford have only lost one of their previous nine matches against Newcastle in all competitions, with under 3.5 goals being scored on every occasion.

Team news: Watford will be without Isaac Success, Gerard Deulofeu and Daryl Janmaat for the remainder of the season. But Pearson has no fresh injury concerns.

Newcastle will be hoping that key players Allan Saint-Maximin and Jamaal Lascelles are fit enough for Saturday after missing the midweek clash with Man City.

Watford will be brimming with confidence after picking up their first win since the restart, but Newcastle – with the exception of their thrashing to Man City – have been playing well in recent weeks.

Forebet predicts that this will be an open game with plenty of goalscoring opportunities. A high-scoring draw is on the cards.
