Can Aston Villa upset Liverpool?

Following a humiliating 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Manchester City, Liverpool will be hoping to get back on track when Aston Villa visit Anfield on Sunday.

The newly-crowned champions were nowhere near their best on Thursday as last year’s champions inflicted a second league defeat of the season on Jurgen Klopp’s side.

After drawing with Merseyside rivals Everton in their first game back before hammering Crystal Palace 4-0, it’s fair to say that Liverpool’s heavy loss to Man City was uncharacteristic.

The Premier League title may be wrapped up, but Klopp will be eager for his player to finish the season on a high.

However, it is even more important that Aston Villa finish the season a high. Dean Smith’s side are stuck in the bottom three after failing to win any of their four games since the restart.

Draws with Sheffield United and Newcastle have done very little to ease the club’s relegation fears, whole defeats to Chelsea and Wolves have damaged the club’s chances of survival.

The Villains remain one point from safety, but they are running out of time to save their season. Unfortunately, a trip to Anfield doesn’t present Villa with a promising opportunity to get some more points of the board.

Liverpool have claimed three consecutive Premier League victories over Villa, racking up an aggregate scoreline of 11-3.

Trezeguet gave Villa and early lead in the reverse fixture earlier in the season, but last-gasp goals from Andrew Robertson and Sadio Mane turned to game on its head in the final five minutes.

Xherdan Sahqiri is on the verge of returning from injury for Liverpool, although centre-back duo Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip remain sidelined.

As for Villa, the visitors are still without long-term absentees Wesley and Tom Heaton, while Henri Lansbury, Frederic Guilbert, Matt Target, and Bjorn Engles are all doubts.

Liverpool's remarkable home run – 47 games unbeaten in all competitions – isn’t likely to be ended by a Villa team that have lost seven of their previous nine games.

Villa are fighting for their lives at the moment, but Liverpool will be desperate to assert their authority and return to winning ways this weekend.

Both teams have scored in 12 of Villa’s previous 16 games in all competitions, so the away side may get on the scoresheet on Sunday.

However, Forebet predicts that Liverpool will net over 1.5 goals on their way to victory.
