Real Sociedad to continue top-four form against Alaves
3133

Real Sociedad are unbeaten in two straight La Liga games and holding onto fourth place with five teams chasing them. The Royals are level on points with fifth-placed Getafe (47) but have a game in hand which will be played on Thursday night at Alaves.

Just five points currently separate Real Sociedad with ninth-place Granada and the pressure is on manager Imanol Alguacil to keep the team in the top four. The Royals damaged their hopes of a top-four finish in their Primera return on matchday 28 with a 1-1 draw with Osasuna.

Alaves head into matchday 29 in 15th place and their status in La Liga under threat. Seven points currently separate Alaves from 18th-place Mallorca. Alaves have a game in hand on Mallorca and could pull 10 points ahead almost saving their status in the Primera.

Real Sociedad won their last two meetings versus Alaves including their meeting from earlier this campaign. The Royals won 3-0 with all three goals coming in the first half of play.

Mikel Oyarzabal scored twice on either side of Willian Jose with all three strikes coming in the opening 41 minutes. Oyarzabal’s second goal came from the penalty spot.

Real Sociedad won on their last three trips to the Mendizorrota Stadium. They will fancy their chances of a fourth straight Primera win away to Alaves.

The club have taken 20 points from 42 possible on their travels. Alguacil’s side have been guilty of conceding too many goals away from home and not scoring enough goals. Real Sociedad are –3 in goal difference scoring just 18 times and allowing 21 goals against.

Alaves are unbeaten in three straight matches at home and taken 23 points from 42 available. They are +7 in goal difference allowing just 11 goals to opponents. Although Real Sociedad have been excellent with attacking players Jose, Oyarzabal, and Martin Odegaard, they will have difficult in the final third.

Real Sociedad are in uncharted territory. They qualified for the Copa del Rey final versus Basque rival Athletic Bilbao prior to the Covid-19 hiatus. Now, they are chasing Champions League football.

It will be difficult to hang onto fourth place, but Thursday night’s trip to the Mendizorrota Stadium should end in a win. Although last time out, Real Sociedad scored three times, Thursday night’s match should finish with under 2.5 goals.

Five of the last six games between Alaves and Real Sociedad ended with under 2.5 goals. Meanwhile, their last six games ended with Real Sociedad keeping clean sheets. Thursday night will see Real Sociedad win to nil and keep hold of fourth place for the time being.
