Defending Champions Face Home Test Against Gunners

Wednesday the 17th of June is the day we have will be waiting for as the 2019/20 English Premier League season resumes. The second kick-off of the evening features the defending champions, Manchester City as they meet Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium.

The hosts are currently in second place on 57 points but too far adrift of Liverpool to have any realistic chance of retaining their title. Arsenal are in 9th place on 40 points and will need a strong finish to the season to qualify for Europe.

Manchester City’s most recent Premier League fixture came at local rivals Manchester United on the 6th of March. The game ended in a disappointing 2-0 defeat and all but ended the very slim hopes they had of catching Liverpool. However, that was Manchester city's first defeat in 6 games having enjoyed a 5 match winning streak.

The Citizens defeated West Ham United at home in the Premier League, Leicester City away in the Premier League, Real Madrid away in the Champions League, Sheffield Wednesday away in the FA Cup and Aston Villa in the League Cup final.

Trends show Manchester City are undefeated in their last 5 home Premier League games and have lost only one of their last 9. They have scored 2 or more goals in each of their last 5 league games at the Etihad stadium and in 8 of the last 9 on home soil.

Arsenal cannot afford to drop more points in their pursuit of European football next season. Prior to the suspension of the Premier League in March, Arsenal Defeated West Ham United 1-0 at home in the league. Trends show The Gunners are undefeated in their last 8 Premier League matches and will be hoping to continue that run in this game.

However, Arsenal have won only 4 of those 8 matches, although they include each of their last 3 league games. All 3 of those victories came at home against Newcastle United, Everton and West Ham United. Arsenal's away form shows they are difficult to beat as they are undefeated in their last 7 away Premier League games. Despite being tough opposition on the road, Arsenal have failed to win any of their last 5 away league matches.

In 6 of Arsenal's last 8 away matches of all competitions, they have seen under 2.5 goals.

Looking ahead to the team news and Manchester City have a fully fit squad available. Those who were struggling prior to the suspension of the league, including Leroy Sane, are now fit and it will be interesting to see who Pep Guardiola selects.

Arsenal travel north without Calum Chambers, Cedric Soares and Tyreece John-Jules who are injured. They also have doubts over the fitness of Lucas Torreira.

This is a fixture which has been dominated by Manchester City in recent seasons and they have won each of the last 5 Premier League games between the two teams. Manchester City are expected to come out on top once more and could do so by keeping a clean sheet. There is also a good chance we could see under 2.5 goals scored.
