Schalke aim to end horrendous form versus Union Berlin

Schalke are 13 matches without a win in all competitions and have experienced four consecutive losses. The good news for under pressure coach David Wagner is Union Berlin are struggling as well and Schalke could finally end their horrendous form.

Union Berlin are just four points above the relegation playoff place. The Iron Ones are winless in six straight Bundesliga matches with four of those fixtures finishing in losses. Last week’s game finished in a 4-1 defeat for Union Berlin at the hands of Borussia Monchengladbach.

These teams have met just three times over the last 20 years in league, cup and friendly matches. Their match played earlier this campaign in Gelsenkirchen saw Schalke win 2-1 thanks to goals from Benito Raman and Suat Serdar on either side of a Marcus Ingvartsen penalty.

Union Berlin have been good at home this season with 20 points from 42 possible. The problem for the Iron Ones is they feed heavily off of home supporters and playing behind closed doors has hurt their attempts to claim wins.

Urs Fischer’s team should continue to struggle at home without supporters in the stadium as Schalke seek to claim a first away win since November.

The biggest trend seen in the Bundesliga since the Covid-19 break ended is home-field advantage has been nullified. Away teams are playing well and claiming wins when they typically would have dropped points. Matchday 29 saw six of the league’s nine matches won by the away team.

Union Berlin have officially made Marius Bülter's loan from Magdeburg permanent. He has scored seven times for the Iron Ones. Fischer needs the forward to combine with 12-goal man Sebastian Andersson for Union Berlin to have any hope of claiming a win.

The veteran coach will have midfielder Robert Andrich back from suspension to provide more steel in the centre of the park.

Wagner has several important injury issues heading into matchday 30. Schalke captain Omar Mascarell and top scorer Suat Serdar are recovering from groin and knee injuries, respectively. American midfield Weston McKennie is suspended due to yellow card accumulation.

Wagner may move Barcelona loanee Jean-Clair Todibo into midfield due to his lack of options in the centre of the park. Goals have been hard to come by for Schalke. They have been outscored 10-1 in their last four league matches.

Can Schalke end their horrendous form? The Blues should finally claim a victory at the expense of a stuttering Union Berlin. Wagner will give himself some breathing space as Schalke win with both teams scoring.
