Bayern and Leverkusen set for high-scoring thriller

The Bundesliga fixtures are coming thick and fast at the moment, and Matchday 30 dishes up a hugely exciting clash between league-leaders Bayern Munich and fifth-place Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.

Both sides have been in excellent form since the restart. Leverkusen won three of their four games in May, while Bayern have taken maximum points since the campaign resumed.

Leverkusen returned to action with two high-scoring victories over Werder Bremen and Borussia Monchengladbach. After suffering an uncharacteristic defeat to Wolfsburg, Bayer bounced back with a win against Freiburg last weekend.

Peter Bosz’s men enjoyed 61% possession in their previous game, and despite their dominance, they managed to score with their only shot on target.

It probably won’t surprise you that Kai Havertz scored the only goal of the game. The 20-year-old has been on fire since the restart, netting five goals in four games.

Leverkusen are now 14 points clear of sixth-place Wolfsburg, while there is only four points between them and second-place Borussia Dortmund.

Meanwhile, Bayern are on course to claim an eighth consecutive Bundesliga title after opening up a seven-point lead at the top with just five games remaining.

Hansi Flick’s side returned with comfortable win over Union Berlin before thrashing Eintracht Frankfurt 5-2. A hugely important victory over Dortmund was then followed by another five-goal hammering over Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Not only do Bayern boast the best defensive record in the division, but they are also the top scorers – averaging just under three goals per game in 2019/20.

Barring a miraculous turn of events, unstoppable Bayern should be crowned champions yet again following another dominant campaign.

Remarkably, Leverkusen have actually beaten Bayern in each of their previous two Bundesliga meetings. Bosz’s side claimed a 2-1 victory at the Allianz Arena in this season’s reverse fixture.

However, given Bayern’s imperious form, it’s going to be extremely difficult for Leverkusen to make it three wins in a row in this fixture.

Leverkusen will be without striker Kevin Volland as he continues to recover from a ligament tear, so the in-form Havertz is likely to lead the line again.

Bayern’s injury list contains Corentin Tolisso and Thiago, although Philippe Coutinho – who has hasn’t featured since the restart – is close to returning from an ankle problem.

Leverkusen and Bayern have both been involved in numerous high-scoring matches since the campaign got back underway, so this is likely to be another game full of goals.

Forebet predicts that Bayern will edge Leverkusen, with over 4.5 total goals being scored.
