Can Watford continue resurgent run against Aston Villa?
2856

Aston Villa host Watford on Tuesday night for a crucial relegation six pointer. Villa are currently 18th in the Premier League table, while Watford are one place and one point ahead of Dean Smith’s side.

Once again, Jack Grealish was the hero in the previous round. Villa appeared to be heading for back-to-back league defeats last weekend, but Grealish’s late strike saw his side rescue a point against Brighton.

Following their 6-1 hammering at the hands of Manchester City the week before, the draw with Brighton could prove to be a vital point come the end of the season.

Smith’s side have won just six of their 23 league games this term. Only bottom club Norwich have lost more top-flight games than Villa in 2019/20, while the Canaries are also the only side to have conceded more goals than Villa this season.

On the other hand, Watford will be full of confidence after another impressive performance. The Hornets held Tottenham to a goalless draw last time out and could’ve won the game if it wasn’t for Troy Deeney’s penalty miss.

New boss Nigel Pearson has overseen a remarkable upturn in form in recent weeks. Watford are unbeaten in their last six league games – winning four and drawing two. Only Liverpool have picked up more points than Watford over the last five games.

Pearson has clearly worked on the team’s defensive game as Watford have kept four clean sheets since the new manager took over. Watford have also scored at an average of just under two goal per game since his arrival.

Watford thrashed Aston Villa when the two teams met just under a month ago. Deeney netted twice and Isamaila Sarr completed the scoring as the Hornets claimed a convincing 3-0 victory at Vicarage Road.

Dean Smith will know that if his team play anywhere near the level they played in the previous meeting, Villa will once again come away from this fixture without anything to show for their efforts.

Villa’s key trio of John McGinn, Wesley and Tom Heaton are all expected to miss the remainder of the campaign through injury, so new signing Pepe Reina is likely to start in goal again.

As for Watford, in-form winger Isamaila Sarr looks set to miss out this week after sustaining a hamstring injury against Spurs in the previous round.

Watford have scored exactly three goals in each of their last three games against Villa and this trend looks set to continue on Tuesday.

Forebet predicts that Villa and Watford are likely to produce plenty of goals. Given Watford’s recent record against Dean Smith’s side, the Hornets are expected to claim the victory by scoring over 2.5 goals.
