It may not be the most glamorous of fixtures in this weekend’s footballing calendar but nevertheless an extremely important one for both teams ahead of this bottom half clash in the Championship with both Luton Town and Birmingham City desperate for three points.
Luton Town currently sit bottom of the Championship and their cause certainly hasn’t been helped by the fact that The Hatters have lost 5 of their last 6 matches in the second tier, leaving them bottom of the pile and three points adrift of safety.
Defeats to Stoke City, Preston North End, Swansea City, Bristol City and Millwall have ensured that Saturday’s hosts still remain firmly ensconced at the bottom of the division, but results on home turf at their Kenilworth Road do give Luton a glimmer of hope.
Recent wins against Charlton Athletic and Wigan Athletic, both by 2-1 margins, have at least helped Luton stay in touch with the teams above them and having won 4 of their total of 6 wins to date at Kenilworth Road, the hosts have a fighting chance here.
Goals have also continued to flow as 10 of Luton’s 12 home matches so far this season have resulted in over 2.5 goals scored.
Onto Birmingham City and the visitors pulled off something of a surprise win in last weekend’s FA Cup third round win against fellow Championship outfit, Blackburn Rovers, to hand the Blues a much-needed win and a welcome boost to a fragile morale.
However, it’s now back to the grim realities of the Championship this Saturday where Birmingham have also lost 5 of their last 6 matches in the second tier overall, and this has resulted in a slow but steady decline in Birmingham’s league position.
The Blues now occupy a disappointing 18th place in the Championship and an away fixture would usually spell further doom and gloom but Birmingham have actually improved of late on the road.
The visitors have suffered just 1 defeat out of their last 5 matches on their travels which was a 3-0 loss at Hull City, but points picked up at Huddersfield Town, Sheffield Wednesday and Blackburn Rovers along with a 3-2 win at Reading will also give Birmingham hope ahead of this clash.
Both teams will be desperate for the three points here and both will fancy their chances of ending their dismal run, so we could see a few goals here.
