Fourth-place Rennes will host seventh-placed Bordeaux on Saturday night in Ligue 1. Four points separate the two teams and Bordeaux could put a dent in that lead with a victory away from home.

The race for Champions League football is heating up in Ligue 1 with just five points separating Rennes in fourth place and 11th-placed Saint-Etienne.

Bordeaux have hit a rocky patch in their season with three straight losses coming in Ligue 1 and cup matches. The poor run of form suffered by Bordeaux has come at the same time as manager Paulo Sousa being linked with the Arsenal manager’s job.

The team’s three straight losses ended a six-match unbeaten run in all competitions. Not only have Bordeaux lost matches recently, but they have only scored one goal over the course of 270 minutes of football.

Rennes are coming off of a midweek loss in the cup to Amiens. The defeat ended a five-match winning streak in all competitions that Rennes were on. That five-match run saw Rennes win to nil three times.

Julian Stephens’ Rennes are unbeaten in eight of their last 10 fixtures in Ligue 1 versus Bordeaux. The Red and Blacks won just three of those matches while drawing five with Bordeaux.

Rennes go into the fixture in great form and will fancy their chances of getting another result. Meanwhile, Bordeaux will want to stop the losing streak and get back on track in search of Champions League football.

Eleven of Rennes’ 24 matches this season have seen over 2.5 goals. The Red and Blacks have been good defensively this season. However, six of the last 10 matches versus Bordeaux have seen both teams find the back of the net.

Bordeaux will be able to call on his top players for Saturday’s fixture. Centre-back Laurent Koscielny recovered from a bone contusion he suffered in October. He will take his place in Sousa’s back three.

Meanwhile, striker Josh Maja should be played up front amid links to Chelsea. It is speculated that Maja could be a big-money transfer target of the Blues to provide competition to Tammy Abraham. The striker has five goals in 16 Ligue 1 appearances.

Rennes are in great form right now and should continue that play at home against Bordeaux. Striker Mbaye Niang has scored seven times in Ligue 1 this season and could get on the scoresheet once more.

The two Ligue 1 top-four hopefuls should combine for over 2.5 goals a Rennes pick up a big home victory.
