Newcastle United aim for third straight win on Monday Night Football
6662

Newcastle United have won back to back matches in the Premier League and are unbeaten in three straight fixtures.

Steve Bruce has the Magpies up to 13th in the league table on 15 points from 36. Newcastle United will hope Monday night is successful as they head to Villa Park to take on Aston Villa.

Dean Smith’s Villains are in 17th place and four points behind Newcastle United. Aston Villa are outside the relegation zone but just three points separate them from 18th-place Watford. Both teams need wins to improve their likelihood of Premier League survival.

Aston Villa have not beaten Newcastle United in all competitions in 12 tries. The Magpies have been brilliant against their rival posting a 6W-6D-0L record in their last 12 matches.

The last time the two teams met was in the EFL Championship in 2016-17. Newcastle United gained promotion that season and took four points from Aston Villa. Their most recent meeting at Villa Park saw Newcastle United draw 1-1 with the hosts.

Smith has several injury concerns heading into the weekend with goalkeeper Tom Heaton being the biggest. Heaton will take a late fitness test but could miss the fixture due to a calf injury. The issue saw Heaton withdraw from the England national team during the break.

Jose Peleteiro, Jack Grealish, Bjorn Engels, and Matt Targett are all listed as possible returns from injury. Meanwhile, Keinan Davis and Jed Steer are both ruled out of the match due to injury.

Newcastle United also have their fair share of injury problems. The good news is defender Florian Lejeune could be back in the team. Defender Ciaran Clark could miss out on the game and will undergo a late fitness test. Clark picked up an injury on Ireland international duty.

Making Newcastle United’s injury issue more complex is the absence of captain Jamaal Lascelles. The defender is expected back after Christmas after picking up a leg injury against Bournemouth.

Despite the defensive issues Bruce faces, Newcastle United are in fine form. Back to back wins have shown Bruce is doing good things at St. James’ Park. Newcastle United have taken six points from 18 on the road and should get three more big points on Monday night.

Midfielder Jonjo Shelvey is playing well and is tied for the most goals at Newcastle United with two. Shelvey could get on the scoresheet as Newcastle United win for a third straight time. Expect both teams to score and over 2.5 goals.
