Preston can nick win at Reading
1982

The international break couldn’t have come soon enough for Saturday’s hosts, Reading, as they had suffered 5 defeats in their last 6 matches which resulted in the club parting ways with former Portuguese manager, Jose Gomes, and appointing former Sporting Director, Mark Bowen as the new manager.

Losses to Charlton Athletic, Middlesbrough, Blackburn Rovers, Fulham and Bristol City have plunged The Royals back into early relegation contention as the hosts sit third from bottom in the Championship.

Much was expected of Reading this season under former boss, Gomes, as he’d steered Reading to safety at the end of last term so the fans anticipated an improvement upon their last campaign this time around.

However, just 2 wins from their first 11 matches of this new Championship season was too much for The Royals board and Gomes was shown the door. Reading have registered just 1 home win out of their first 5 matches at their Madejski Stadium which was a surprise 3-0 win against Cardiff City.

With just 1 win out of their last 7 home matches overall, this could be a tough 90 minutes against a well-organised Preston North End outfit.

Onto Preston then, and the visitors resume after the international break sitting in an impressive 3rd place on the Championship ladder having put together a promising sequence of 8 matches without defeat under manager, Alex Neil.

Within this solid run of results, Preston have registered 5 wins and 3 draws which has helped lift them into one of the early play-off positions and just 1 point behind the top two clubs, West Brom and Nottingham Forest.

Victories against Stoke City, Sheffield Wednesday, Brentford, Birmingham City and a 5-1 rout of Barnsley just before the international break should see a confident Preston outfit make their way down to Berkshire for this clash on Saturday afternoon.

There’s still work for Preston to do on their travels though as they’ve picked up just the 1 win on the road to date this term, but they do bring a 3-match unbeaten run with them to the Madejski Stadium which will no doubt be a welcome boost to the visitors as they look to hang onto their top three position in the Championship.

Midfielder Johnson leads Preston’s goalscoring charts with 7 goals to date and it’s Preston that look the more likely to pick up the points in this encounter.
