Can Sweden inch closer to Spain in Euro 2020 qualifying Group F?
3531

Spain dropped points for the first time in Euro 2020 qualifying Group F Saturday to Norway. La Roja conceded a second-half stoppage-time penalty to Norway allowing them to take a point.

Sweden managed a 4-0 win over Malta over the weekend and are now five points behind Spain in Euro 2020 Group F qualifying. Sweden have nine points to play for and could still overtake Spain as group winners.

Head coach Janne Andersson has already led his team to a Euro 2020 playoff place at the very least. Sweden are one point ahead of third-place Romania in the group and need to hold off the eastern Europeans in the fight for automatic qualification to the tournament proper.

Sweden visited Spain in June at the Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid. La Roja had little difficulty claiming a 3-0 victory in that fixture. All three goals came in the second half with two being penalties. The three-goal scoreline may have just flattered Spain and Sweden should be better on Tuesday night on home soil.

Spain manager Robert Moreno has a dilemma on his hands concerning his goalkeepers. Chelsea glovesman Kepa Arrizabalaga and Manchester United shot-stopper David De Gea are fighting for the No. 1 shirt.

Neither player has been great recently. De Gea and his club team Manchester United are struggling in the Premier League with goals flying in against them.

Kepa didn’t do his reputation well against Norway as he conceded late penalty. The goalkeeper’s mistake cost Spain all three points. Moreno may choose De Gea in goal against Sweden.

Spanish football fans praised the work of Arsenal player Dani Ceballos against Norway. The midfielder had a solid game in the centre of the park leading the Spanish attack. He was replaced just after the hour mark for Villarreal man Santi Cazorla as Moreno chose to bring on the 34-year-old.

Ceballos could start once more against Sweden as Tuesday night’s match has become more of a must-win for Spain to qualify as group winners.

Spain have posted a 6W-4D-3L record against Sweden in 13 all-time meetings. La Roja have won three straight matches against Sweden in all competitions but going to Stockholm will be a tricky proposition.

Is Spain running out of steam now? Their draw in Oslo was the first time Spain hadn’t scored at least two goals in a match in Group F qualifying.

La Roja should overcome their sudden issues in the final third when playing Sweden. Although it will be a close encounter, Spain will pick up all three points and move closer to automatic qualification.

Sweden will keep it close with one goal separating the two sides as over 2.5 goals go into the back of the net.
