There may not be two teams in the international game with a bigger gulf in clash than Belgium and San Marino. The pair meet on Thursday night in Group I of qualifying for Euro 2020.
There has never been any doubt about who the dominant team is in the group. Belgium have cruised through yet another qualification campaign and it is unsurprising that the Red Devils have won all their six group games and scored twice in each victory.
When they have taken to the field against all their opposition in the group, it has almost been a case of not if they will win, but how many goals they will beat their opponents by.
Their least convincing result in the group was a 2-0 win in Cyprus. They head into this game having won 4-0 in San Marino and then Scotland.
Not only have the home side been prolific, they have kept clean sheets in their last five Euro qualifiers in Group I. There is really nothing down for Thursday’s visitors but another hammering.
San Marino have for the longest time been a team that has struggled to pick up any sorts of results in the international game. The fact that the visitors have lost all their qualifiers in the group is as unsurprising as the fact the home side has won all of theirs.
It will not surprise many that the visitors have also conceded at least twice in all six group games.
It would be one of the biggest shocks in the history of football if the visitors ended their 33-game losing run in this clash. They would also need to end a 28-game losing run on their travels in qualifying for the European Championships.
