Scotland host Belgium in massive Euro 2020 qualifying match
2027
Scotland host Euro 2020 qualifying Group I rivals Belgium in a massive match at Hampden Park on Monday night. A win could propel the Scots up the table following a poor start to qualifying.
Steve Clarke’s Scottish team head into the fixture having already lost to Belgium in Euro 2020 qualifying. Scotland lost 3-0 in Brussels in March thanks to Romelu Lukaku (two) and Kevin De Bruyne finding the back of the net.
Belgium have dominated Group I in qualifying. The Red Devils have posted 12 points from four games going into the international break. Roberto Martinez has the team back to playing its best football following a slight dip in form during UEFA Nations League play.
Martinez will take his Belgium squad to Hampden Park minus two very important attacking players. Forwards Eden and Thorgan Hazard will both miss out on the game due to injuries.
Eden Hazard hasn’t played for his new team Real Madrid all season. The Belgian is recouping from a muscle injury at the moment.
Anderlecht goalkeeper Hendrik Van Crombrugge was included in Belgium’s squad following Koen Casteel dropping out of the team. Influential holding midfielder Axel Witsel has also missed out on the squad this time around.
Clarke has been talking up Scotland’s need for wins during the international break. Scotland are assured of a Euro 2020 playoff place due to their performances in the UEFA Nations League. However, Clarke will want his side to push for an automatic place in the tournament proper.
The Scotland manager took over the reins of the team in June. He has posted a 1W-0D-1L record in qualifying.
Clarke’s only blemish was the loss to Belgium. He now has a vital three-game period to get Scotland points. Scotland kicked off the international break against Russia before playing Belgium. They will then play Russia once more in early October.
Scotland striker Steven Naismith missed out on training ahead of Scotland’s match versus Russia. However, his absence wasn’t significant and the forward should play a part against Belgium.
According to Liverpool left-back and Scotland captain Andrew Robertson, Clarke has “put belief back in the squad”. Can he mastermind a big win over World Cup 2018 third-place team Belgium?
Belgium have a sterling record against Scotland posting a 12W-3D-4L record. Scotland have not defeated Belgium in their last six matches. Clarke’s team has a big task ahead of them on Monday night at Hampden Park.
