On Thursday night, AZ Alkmaar host Royal Antwerp at the AFAS Stadion in the first leg of the Europa League play-offs.
AZ Alkmaar have had a fairly comfortable path to the play-off rounds beating Swedish side Hacken 3-0 on aggregate before seeing off Ukrainian outfit Mariupol' 4-0 in the last round.
The results mean in the earlier rounds have contributed to the Dutch sides five-match unbeaten run in the Europa League. Their defensive record in the competition this season has been impressive, as they have yet to concede a goal in their four matches so far this season.
AZ have a mixed recent record on home soil in this competition. However, a record of just three wins in their last eight home matches is not a great one.
Their recent matches at the AFAS Stadion in this competition have at least offered value for money when it comes to goals, as there have been over 2.5 goals scored in five of their last six Europa League matches.
AZ are slight favourites to head through to the group stages of the Europa League. However, they cannot afford complacency.
This season is Royal Antwerp’s first experience of Europa League football in its current guise. In the last round, the team based in Deurne saw off the threat of Viktoria Plzen.
The Belgian side recorded a 1-0 home win in the first leg and suffered a 2-1 extra-time defeat in the second leg in the Czech Republic, but came through on away goals.
The visitors have made a relatively bright to their domestic campaign winning three of their first four games in the Belgium top-flight. They will be hoping that their decent league form will continue in the Europa League.
Forebet predicts that AZ will record a narrow victory in a high-scoring encounter to gain the advantage in the tie.
