Despite still being in the qualifying stages of the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League, there are some big teams in the competition from the top European Leagues. Strasbourg and Eintracht Frankfurt are good examples and they have been drawn together in the Europa League playoffs.

Only one team can progress to the group stages this season and the first leg of the tie will be played on Thursday 22nd August at the Stade de la Meinau in France.

Strasbourg finished 11th in Ligue 1 last season, some 8 places and 17 points adrift of the Europa League qualifying spot. However, they won the Coupe de la Ligue, beating the likes of Lille, Lyon, Bordeaux and Guingamp to lift the trophy. That saw them progress to the second qualifying round of the Europa League this season.

Strasbourg met Maccabi Haifa and won the first leg 3-1 at home before losing the away leg 2-1 but progressing 4-3 on aggregate. Moving into the third qualifying round and Strasbourg were handed a tie with Lokomotiv Plovdiv of Bulgaria. Having won the away leg 1-0, Strasbourg were in control of the tie and they recorded the same margin of victory on home soil to win 2-0 on aggregate.

Trends show Strasbourg are undefeated in their last four games in all competitions this season. That includes two in the Europa League and two in Ligue 1. They are undefeated in their three home matches this season and have kept one clean sheet.

Eintracht Frankfurt reached the semi-final of the Europa League last season and came very close to going all the way to the final. Their 7th place finish in the Bundesliga last season saw them progress to the second qualifying round of the Europa League this season. They were paired with Flora of Estonia and the Germans were the huge favourites to win.

Eintracht Frankfurt won the away leg 2-1 and completed the job with a 2-1 win at home. The third qualifying round was kind to Eintracht Frankfurt and they met Vaduz of Liechtenstein, dominating the first leg away from home, winning 5-0. The second leg was a formality and they won 1-0 to progress 6-0 on aggregate.

Trends show Eintracht Frankfurt have won each of their six competitive matches this season. Three of which have been away from home.

Team news and Strasbourg are expected to be without Youssouf Fofana who has a sprained ankle. Anthony Caci is also a doubt for the hosts.

Eintracht Frankfurt could be without four players for this match with Marco Russ, Nicolai Müller, Frederik Rønnow and Djibril Sow doubtful.

This could be a very close game with both teams hoping to take a positive result ahead of the second leg. Strasbourg have the home advantage but Eintracht Frankfurt have the experience of last season in Europe. This match could end in a draw, with both teams scoring.
