We are nearing the completion of the second qualifying round of the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League.  On Tuesday 30th July we have several matches to enjoy, one of which is between Nomme Kalju and Celtic.

Celtic dominated their home leg and came away with a convincing 5-0 victory.  That result has left Nomme Kalju with a huge mountain to climb and it is a massive ask for them to progress in the Champions League this season.

Nomme Kalju play their domestic football in Estonia and it looks as though they are going to struggle to win the league this season.  They are 12 points behind the leaders and have a lot of catching up to do if they are going to challenge.

Trends show they have won only one of their last six games in all competitions.  That win came away to Shkendija in the first qualifying round of the Champions League.  Nomme Kalju have since played two games and were held at home in the Estonian league before losing to Celtic in the first leg of this tie.

Nomme Kalju have lost their last two home games in the Champions League, including a heavy 4-0 loss at the hands of Viktoria Plzen in 2013. They also lost the home leg of their first round qualifying tie 1-0 this season.

Celtic made light work of the first leg having eventually broken through in the 36th minute.  From then on it was an easy night and Celtic were 5-0 up after 77 minutes and could easily have extended their lead in the latter stages.

The Scottish champions have yet to begin the defence of their domestic title this season and aside from the Champions League, they have played friendly games.  In the Champions League this season, Celtic have won all three of their games.  They defeated Sarajevo 3-1 away from home before completing the job with a 2-1 home win.

Celtic have a mixed set of recent results away from home in the Champions League. They have won six of their last twenty-one away matches but have lost just one of the last four.  The defeat came at the hands of AEK Athens in qualifying last season.  Both teams have scored in each of their last two away Champions League games.

Looking ahead to the team news and Nomme Kalju could play two up-front in this game with nothing to lose.  Brazilian Liliu and Estonian striker Robert Kirss could lead the line.

Celtic were forced to withdraw Boli Bolingoli in the first leg and he may not be risked for this match having felt ill.  Tom Rogic is injured and will miss out.  Striker Leigh Griffiths could keep his place in the team following his goal last week.

The tie is over in terms of knowing who will progress and much will depend on Celtic’s attitude.  The hosts will press to try and score a goal but Celtic should have too much for them and come away with the win.
