Sligo set to hamper Derry’s European chances

Derby City are one of the sides aiming for a top-three finish in the Irish Premier Division. On Friday night, City have a chance to move within touching distance of the European spots when they host Sligo Rovers at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium.
Derry are six games unbeaten in the Irish top-flight, but the problem is four of those unbeaten matches have finished in draws, including last time out when UCD held the home side to a goalless draw.
The draws have really dented their hopes of sealing a European spot this season in the Premier Division. City are still fourth place in the table and five points outside the top-three, with a game in-hand on third-place Bohemians, though.
The home side has been prolific in the Premier Division this season. In fact, only league leaders Dundalk have scored more goals in the Irish top-flight than City this season.
Forward players David Parkhouse and Junior Ogedi-Uzokwe have been key to their attacking efforts this season, both scoring seven goals each in the Irish top-flight.
Sligo will feel they still have a chance of making the European spots this season. However, the visitors are 11 points outside the top-six and six points behind the home side in the table.
A poor recent run of form in the league, including just one win from their last seven matches in the Premier Division, could prove fatal to their faint hopes of making Europe for next season.
A lack of goals has been the visitor’s biggest problem of late in the Premier Division, as they have failed to score in three of their last four league outings. A poor away record has not helped their cause either, as they have won just once in five league matches on their travels.
