Dundalk to beat Riga on away goals
2654
On Wednesday evening, Riga and Dundalk go head-to-head in the Champions League first qualifying round second leg. It is all to play for after the first leg in Ireland finished goalless.
Although the home side has the advantage of playing on home soil, the second leg also gives Dundalk the chance to score an away goal.
Considering the visitors have been prolific this season, then you certainly cannot rule the possibility out.
However, the fact that the Irish team have failed to win in their last five away games in the Champions League suggests that the home side have a fighting chance of progressing to the next round of the competition.
They have also won just once in 11 matches in the Champions League, so are not exactly world beaters at this level.
One stat against a home victory is that Dundalk have scored in all but one of their last five matches on their travels in Europe’s elite competition
The first leg of this tie made history, as it was Riga’s first ever appearance in the Champions League. It was not a terrible debut result for the Latvian team.
They have stayed in the tie and due to Dundalk’s patchy record in the competition, they will be eying a place in the next round.
Riga have not been great on home soil of late. In fact, they have failed to win in their last two home matches, while also failing to score in both encounters.
Prior to the recent dip in home form the Latvian side were unbeaten in six games at home, having recorded five wins, so are usually a tough opponent on their own patch.
This game is a difficult one to call. However, Forebet predicts that Dundalk will just edge through by virtue of away goals after a low-scoring draw.
