Algeria take on Guinea in Cairo on Sunday in an AFCON 2019 round of sixteen clash.

Algeria were one of the standout performers of the group stage and come into this match as firm favorites.

On the other hand, Guinea qualified for the round of sixteen as one of the best third-placed teams and will need to up their game if they are to compete with Algeria.

The National Elephants opened their AFCON 2019 account with a 2-2 draw with Madagascar before losing 1-0 to Nigeria in their second group game.

A 2-0 victory over Burundi in their last match was enough to see them advance to the knockout stage.

Auxerre striker Mohamed Yattara scored both goals for Guinea that day and his team will be hoping that he can continue his goal-scoring form against Algeria.

If Guinea are to upset Algeria, they will need to do it without star-man Naby Keita. He has suffered a recurrence of his abductor injury and the Liverpool midfielder will be out for the remainder of the tournament.

Algeria finished at the top of Group C after picking up maximum points from their three matches.

They began with a 2-0 victory over Kenya, with Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez and the prolific Baghdad Bounedjah both finding the net.

The Desert Foxes then claimed a 1-0 win against Senegal before capping off their perfect group stage with a 3-0 triumph over Tanzania.

Riyad Mahrez and Sofiane Feghouli were rested by head coach Djamel Belmadi in their last match whilst Napoli midfielder Adam Ounas (2) and Leicester City striker Islam Slimani (1) got the goals.

Algeria have failed to fulfil their potential in recent years however they are looking like genuine contenders to claim the trophy this time around.

The head to head record between the two teams is fairly even. Algeria have four wins to their name whilst Guinea have five.

Their most recent meeting came in a friendly match in 2017 and Algeria won 2-1 on that occasion.

Algeria are likely to come out on top again on Sunday. Their squad is far stronger than Guinea’s and the Desert Foxes are looking like the real deal.

Without Naby Keita, Guinea’s midfield is significantly weaker and they will struggle to cope without their captain.

Forebet predicts a comfortable win for Algeria.
