Ivory Coast with Work to Do in Group D

Group D of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations has reached the final round of games. As things stand in the group, Morocco are top on 6 points, Ivory Coast are second with 3 points, South Africa third with 3 points and Namibia are yet to get off the mark.

On Monday 1st July, Namibia meet Ivory Coast knowing they need to win to have any chance of progressing in the tournament. Ivory Coast also need to win to ensure they finish second in the group and do not have to rely on being one of the best third placed teams.

This game will take place at the 30 June Stadium, Cairo and Namibia come into it having lost last time out against South Africa. This was a big derby game and Namibia will have been very disappointed to have lost to their neighbours.  The match was level at 0-0 until Bongani Zunga struck in the 68th minute to win it 1-0 for South Africa.

It was a bitter pill to swallow for Namibia who did well in the opening game of the group against Morocco. They may have lost the match 1-0 but Namibia were the massive underdogs and held out to the 89th minute.

Trends show Namibia have won two of their last seven games in all competitions.The wins have come against Mozambique and Seychelles in qualifying matches.

Ivory Coast won their first game of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations by defeating South Africa 1-0. It was not a brilliant performance by The Elephants by they got the job done thanks to a strike from Jonathan Kodjia.

However, they did not fare so well against Morocco and Ivory Coast conceded after 23 minutes and could not get back into the game. Yassin Bounou did make some good saves to deny Ivory Coast and they created a good chance near the end which was missed by Wilfried Bony.

Trends show Ivory Coast have lost only two of their last fourteen games in all competitions. They have won eight of those matches and scored at least one goal in ten.  Ivory Coast went out in the group stages in the previous Africa Cup of Nations and will not want the same to happen this year.

Looking at the team news and Namibia may look to make some changes in attack as they search for their first goal of the tournament. Isaskar Gurirab could be the name to benefit having come off the bench against South Africa.

Ivory Coast have injury concerns over Serge Aurier who went off during the match with Morocco. Maxwell Cornet will be hoping to start the match in place of Max Gradel.

This is a match Ivory Coast should win comfortably. Forebet predicts win for The Elephants and over 2.5 goals in the match.
