Lens to seal promotion to Ligue 1

Ligue 1 side Dijon host promotion hopeful Lens on Sunday in the second leg of their promotion/relegation playoff. The two sides go into the game following a 1-1 draw in the first leg.

Dijon had to comeback from a goal down to draw level with Lens in the first match. Lens scored through Jean-Ricner Bellegarde in the 49th minute. Dijon equalised through Kwon Chang-hoon in the final nine minutes of the match.

Lens finished fifth in Ligue 2 to qualify for the promotion playoffs. The Ligue 2 side defeated Paris FC and Troyes to reach the promotion/relegation final.

Dijon finished 18th in Ligue 1 just two points from safety. Dijon were able to pick up a last day of the season win over Toulouse while Caen lost on the final day. The combination of results allowed Dijon to reach the playoff final.

Although Dijon had to come from behind to earn a 1-1 draw in the first leg, they equalled Lens in shots. Dijon had 51% of the position while totalling four shots on target. Despite their solid play, a draw was all they could obtain.

The two clubs have met 10 times dating back to 2004. Dijon have dominated the series with Lens picking up a 4W-5D-1L record. However, Lens have picked up back to back draws against Dijon in all competitions going into the second leg.

The 10 matches between Dijon and Lens have been low scoring. Just four times have the two clubs combined for over 2.5 goals. Meanwhile, eight of the games between Dijon and Lens have seen both sides score.

Lens forward Yannick Arthur Gomis leads the team in scoring with 16 goals in all competitions. Fourteen of his goals came from open play. If Lens get a penalty, Gomis will be tasked with taking the spot kick on Sunday.

Dijon have not had great individual goal scoring. The Ligue 1 side’s leading scorer is Julio Tavares. The forward has tallied five goals in all competitions. Four of those goals came from open play.

Although the two clubs have played just four games with over 2.5 goals scored, Sunday’s game should see the two teams start on the front foot. Dijon must save their Ligue 1 status and will attack Lens early and often.

Lens will go into the match confident they can get a victory and progress. Sunday’s game will see both teams score as Lens seal their promotion back to the top flight.
