Ajax to clinch the Eredivisie title against De Graafschap

Ajax to clinch the Eredivisie title against De Graafschap

Ajax’s five year wait to win the Eredivisie league title is nearly over. The Amsterdam-based club, who suffered disappointment in the Champions League semifinals, can lift their second trophy of the season on Wednesday night.

Erik ten Hag’s team has already won the KNVB Trophy and the league championship will give them a double that has been long in the making.

De Graafschap can play spoiler on Wednesday night at De Vijverberg Doetinchem. For Ajax to lose the Eredivisie title at this point it would take a miracle, however.

De Graafschap would not only need to win, but a 14-goal difference between Ajax and PSV Eindhoven would need to be overturned.

AFC Ajax will go into the final day knowing they can end the season with a win. They defeated rivals Utrecht 4-1 at the weekend thanks to goals from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Donny van de Beek, and two from Dusan Tadic.

The last time Ajax played De Graafschap in the league this season, the Amsterdam club put eight goals past their opponent without reply. Ajax had the game wrapped up at halftime 3-0.

Forward Hakim Ziyech and defender Daley Blind both scored hat-tricks to power Ajax to victory.

Ajax have scored an incredible 115 goals in the league. Ten Hag’s attack has been relentless and it is reflected in many of the large scorelines this season. Ajax have won by two or more goals 25 times in 33 Eredivisie games.

They average 3.09 goals per game in all competitions with 2.35 goals a match coming away from home. A De Graafschap win on Wednesday night would be about as unlikely as a Ajax allowing three goals in the second half of a Champions League semifinal second leg.

De Graafschap will play in the Eredivisie relegation playoff having secure just 29 points in their first season back in the top-flight. The team has registered a –34-goal difference and it is safe to say they are looking at the relegation playoff rather than this fixture.

A large scoreline loss to Ajax won’t affect De Graafschap and manager Henk de Jong could rest some of his players for the fixture. De Graafschap may be the league’s second worst team, but their players have been able to find the back of the net at times.

Youssef El Jebil has tallied nine goals while Fabian Serrarens has seven. De Graafschap’s problems are all at the back. They cannot defend and will struggle to hold back Ajax’s attack.

Wednesday’s game will see another Ajax win by at least two goals. Over 2.5 goals will fly into the nets with both sides scoring on the final day. Despite De Graafschap getting a goal, Ajax should finish off a fine campaign with a win.
