Borussia Dortmund to keep slim title hopes alive

Borussia Dortmund to keep slim title hopes alive
2520

Just when it looked likely that Borussia Dortmund’s title hopes were over, Bayern Munich dropped points to Nuremburg.

Lucien Favre’s team could have overtaken their rivals, but they too slipped up losing 4-2 to rivals Schalke. Borussia Dortmund are now two points behind Bayern Munich and must go to Werder Bremen and win to keep pace.

While Borussia Dortmund will face a strong test against Werder Bremen, title rivals Bayern Munich should have an easy time against the Bundesliga’s worst team Hannover. Borussia Dortmund could be as many as five points behind Bayern Munich when they kick off.

Werder Bremen won’t rollover for Borussia Dortmund. They sit ninth, five points off of a Europa League place with three games to play. Although Werder Bremen are within touching distance of Europe, manager Florian Kohfeldt must turn around their recent poor form.

The River Islanders have lost back to back games being outscored 5-1. Last weekend, Kohfeldt watched his team lose 4-1 to Fortuna Dusseldorf away from home.

The good news for Kohfeldt is Werder Bremen will welcome Borussia Dortmund to the Weserstadion on Saturday evening. Werder Bremen have obtained 26 of their 46 points at home. Their last three home fixtures have all ended in victory.

Borussia Dortmund defeated Freiburg 4-0 in their last trip away from the Signal Iduna Park. However, their 5-0 massacre at the hands of Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena is still fresh in the mind.

Favre will be without captain Marco Reus due to suspension. The midfielder is having an exceptional season having scored 16 of Borussia Dortmund’s 74 goals. Reus will serve a two-game suspension while Marius Wolf is also suspended for the fixture.

Werder Bremen’s Niklas Moisander will miss the game due to suspension as well. Kohfeldt could have midfielder Davy Klaassen back from injury.

The River Islanders have failed to score in just one Bundesliga game all season. That game was against Bayern Munich. Borussia Dortmund did pick up a victory against Werder Bremen the last time the two sides played, 2-1.

All three goals came in the first half as Paco Alcacer opened the scoring before Reus double Borussia Dortmund’s advantage. Werder Bremen’s Max Kruse pulled a goal back but that was as close as they got.

Saturday’s game should see another exciting fixture between Werder Bremen and Borussia Dortmund with over 2.5 goals scored. The River Islanders will keep their goals scored record going but fall to Borussia Dortmund in the end.
