And then there were three. Just a trio of Premier League fixtures remain and as we go into another enthralling weekend of action, it is Manchester City who start proceedings at the top of the English summit.

That said, with Liverpool playing against Huddersfield on Friday night, it could well be that City go into Sunday’s clash at Burnley lying second in the table and playing catch-up to Jurgen Klopp’s men once again.

However, at the same time this City squad, know that if they keep winning their matches between now and May 12th, then the Premier League will be theirs and they will be the first team to win back to back titles since 2009.

If that is to be the case, then they would have no doubt been pushed all the way by an incredible Liverpool side and either of the two outfits will be worthy winners, but with the title now firmly in City’s hands, you do wonder if they will relinquish what looks like being a vice like grip.

While, you do get the feeling that the defending champions have cleared the final major hurdle and one that came in the shape of Manchester United on Wednesday night, as they picked up a vital 2-0 win at Old Trafford.

It was a slightly cagey first half, but that is only to be expected in a game of such magnitude and after a goalless first half, it was clear to see just how important Pep Guardiola’s interval team talk was going to be.

A talk that certainly did the job, as City came quickly out of the blocks and soon after the break, they found themselves ahead. Bernardo Silva, who has been in imperious form as of late, hit a shot from the edge of the box and it caught David De Gea out at the near post.

While a similar effort from Leroy Sane, would make it 2-0 late in the game and wrapped up a well earned win that puts City in the driving seat and although they will breathe a sigh of relief after that encounter, they also know that they cannot take Burnley lightly.

Especially as Sean Dyche’s men, made life incredibly difficult for Chelsea on Monday night and it has to be said that the Clarets were good value for the point that they earned - one that makes sure they will be playing Premier League football next season.

With their safety all but guaranteed, you do wonder if Burnley will have the same level of fight in them on Sunday and if not, this will of course play into the hands of Pep Guardiola and his title chasing players.

At the same time, you know you are always going to get an honest contest out of Burnley, and they would love nothing more than to play the role of championship destroyers. That said, this should prove to be a routine win for City, as they return back to the top of the table.
