There is just one mid-week fixture in the Premier League and it does not involve the title race.  However, the match between Brighton and Hove Albion and Cardiff City at the American Express Community Stadium has huge ramifications for the bottom of the Premier League table.

A win for Brighton would send them 8 points clear of the visitors and leave them with a great chance of avoiding relegation this season. A win for Cardiff City would close the gap with Brighton to just 2 points and leave the Bluebirds will all to play for next weekend.

Brighton come into this match on the back of a shocking 5-0 home defeat at the hands of Bournemouth on the weekend.  It was a poor performance from the Seagulls and means they have now lost each of their last four matches in all competitions.

There have been defeats at home against Southampton and away to Chelsea in the Premier League plus a 1-0 loss to Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final.

Trends show the fact this game is at home may not be ideal for Brighton as they have won only one of their last six home Premier League matches.  The win came against Huddersfield Town at the beginning of March and there have been defeats against Liverpool, Burnley, Southampton and Bournemouth.

Brighton have managed to score just 2 goals across their last six home Premier League games and they need to improve in attack.

Cardiff City suffered damaging defeat on the weekend as they went down 2-0 at Burnley.  That loss means Cardiff City have lost each of their last three Premier League matches and have won one of their last seven.  The victory came at home over West Ham United.

Away form in the Premier League has been poor and trends show Cardiff City have lost five of their last six games.  There have been defeats at Newcastle United, Arsenal, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Manchester City and Burnley.

Cardiff City have scored just 3 goals in their last six away Premier League matches and have conceded 2 or more goals in five of those six games. Cardiff City have failed to find the back of the net in each of their last three away league matches.

Team news and Brighton will be without wide midfielder Anthony Knockaert who is suspended following his dismissal at the weekend.  Solly March and Pascal Gross remain doubtful.

Cardiff City will assess the fitness of Jazz Richards ahead of the trip to the AMEX Stadium.  However, Callum Paterson, Sol Bamba and Matt Conolly are all out until the end of the season.

This is a huge game for both teams in the fight for survival.  Neither team has been scoring goals freely at home and away respectively and given the nature of their defeat on the weekend, Brighton may be reluctant to push too many men forward.  This could easily end with under 2.5 goals and a home win.
