All Premier League Clash in FA Cup

The English FA Cup has reached the fourth round stage and the draw produced some all Premier League ties.  One of which takes place on Saturday afternoon and is between Newcastle United and Watford.

The FA Cup represents the only hope for either team to win a trophy this season although both are sure to prioritise their place in the Premier League.

Newcastle United have not been having a good time of things both on and off the pitch this season. However, they secured a vital 3 points in a 3-0 win over Cardiff City in the Premier League last weekend.  That was their second win in succession following the 4-2 extra-time victory over Blackburn Rovers in the third round replay.

However, those two victories mask what has been a bad run of form for the Magpies and they have won just one of their last eight games in all competitions inside 90 minutes and two of their last twelve.

Home form does not show anything better and Newcastle United have won just one of their last six home games in all competitions and have lost eight of their last thirteen home competitive matches.  Rafa Benitez’s team have scored one or fewer goals in eleven of those thirteen games and need to show more threat in-front of goal.

Newcastle United also need to improve at the back at St James’ and have kept just three clean sheets in their last thirteen games.

Watford played out a surprising 0-0 draw in their home Premier League match with Burnley last weekend. The Hornets were expected to win the game but could not find the breakthrough although they will be happy with the clean sheet.

The draw with Burnley means Watford are now undefeated in their last five games in all competitions.  Trends show they have suffered just a single defeat in their last nine, which came at home against Chelsea in the Premier League.

Watford have won three and drawn two of their last five away matches, including a 2-0 win at Woking in the FA Cup.  They have been scoring plenty of goals and have netted at least twice in each of their last five away games in all competitions.

However, Watford have kept just two clean sheets in their last eight away matches.

Looking ahead to the team news and Newcastle United will be hoping to see Federico Fernandez return to the squad plus Mohamed Diame could be involved after a hip injury.  Jonjo Shelvey and Paul Dummett are expected to miss out while Yoshinori Muto is on international duty.

Watford are sweating on the fitness of Craig Cathcart, Will Hughes, Younes Kaboul, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Sebastian Prödl who could all recover to play some part in the match.

The result of this game could depend on the teams selected by the managers.  With Newcastle United at home, they have the advantage in the tie and with Premier League action resuming quickly in mid-week, that could make the difference to send the Magpies through to the fifth round.
