Senegal started the Africa Cup of Nations tournament with a fantastic 3-0 victory over Gambia.

The Lions of Teranga are aiming to win the AFCON tournament for the second consecutive competition. So far, Senegal look like they could reach the final once more.

Next up for the Lions of Teranga are Cameroon on matchday No. 2 of Group C. Cameroon are five-time winners of the AFCON tournament, most recently winning the trophy in 2017.

Cameroon didn’t start the tournament as well as expected, drawing 1-1 with Gambia.

After going a goal down in the 10th minute, Cameroon had to fight back to pick up the draw. Frank Magri’s second half goal was enough to give the team a share of the points.

There aren’t many trends to go on between these teams. Matches between the national teams have been few and far between. The teams only played twice during that time frame.

Cameroon picked up a win on penalties at the 2017 AFCON tournament, as they went on to win the competition. The teams met in 2023 in a friendly, with Senegal picking up a 1-0 win.

Senegal completely dominated their fixture against Gambia on matchday No. 1, clocking up 69% possession. The defence allowed just two shots on target.

Cameroon underperformed in their opening match of the tournament. They kept 70% possession and racked up 13 shots. Yet, the Indomitable Lions couldn’t find a winning goal.

Senegal are anchored by forward Sadio Mane, who led the team to the AFCON trophy two years ago.

Mane partnered Habib Diallo and Ismaila Sarr in the opening match in attack. Manager Aliou Cisse will have little motivation to alter his forward line.

Cameroon coach Rigobert Song needs his top players, including captain Vincent Aboubaker to step up and score goals. If Cameroon want to take all three points, they will need to start strongly.

Senegal have produced some excellent statistics so far in the tournament. No team in the AFCON have scored as many goals as Senegal (three).

Compared to the previous AFCON tournament, games are seeing more goals. The opening 22 matches saw an average 2.2 goals per game.

The result of Friday’s game could dictate which team finishes top of Group C. It should be a close fixture between two of Africa’s top national team
