Has RB Leipzig’s season stalled?

RB Leipzig have been one of the sensations of the European football season. The Bundesliga new boys for much of the first half of the campaign were giving reigning champions Bayern Munich a run for their money in the race for the German top-flight.

They sat top of the Bundesliga table and really seemed to have German giants Bayern Munich worried at one stage. Since the winter break, things have not gone so well for RB, though and they are currently now 13 points behind Carlo Ancelotti’s team.

Their recent form has been of particular concern, as the Bundesliga debutants have now suffered four defeats in their last seven games in the league, having failed to win their last three league games.

Not only have Bayern strode away in the race for the title, Bayern’s perennial arch-rivals Dortmund are now just three points behind the men from Leipzig. Even fourth-place Hoffenheim are just four points behind them in the race for the Champions League spots.

It would have been difficult to expect the Bundesliga new boys to sustain their early season form. They were always likely to suffer a dip in form and endure a sticky patch during the campaign.

Whatever happens from now until the end of the season RB Leipzig have been one of the biggest success stories of the season.

Despite spending big money to get to the Bundesliga, few would have believed that they would be sitting second in the table and looking to claim a Champions League spot in their first ever campaign in Germany’s top-flight.

The fact that they are is testament to the good work done by Ralph Hasenhuttl and his team. Despite the criticism that RB Leipzig have received for their perceived buying of success, the team finishing in the top four of the Bundesliga this season would still be an incredible achievement.
