Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad to meet in La Liga top-five clash

It’s a top-five showdown in Spain this weekend, as Atletico Madrid host Real Sociedad at the Metropilitano Stadium.

Diego Simeone’s Atletico go into the match on a three-game winning streak in La Liga. Real Sociedad are also on a three-match winning streak going into the round. Both teams will fancy themselves as potential title contenders.

However, Atletico are five points off first-place Real Madrid. Los Rojiblancos already defeated their city rivals this season and have a game in hand.

Real Sociedad took 15 points from their opening eight games. Although La Real are playing well, a title fight is likely out of the question for the Basque club. However, qualifying for the Champions League would be a major success for Imanol Alguacil’s team.

Atletico took 13 points from the last six matches in La Liga. They outscored their last six opponents 15-6. In each of Atletico’s last three league matches, they scored at least 2.0 goals per game.

Sociedad also took 13 points from the last six matches in the league. They outscored their last six opponents 14-8. La Real rely heavily on a strong defence. They kept clean sheets in their last two games, winning 1-0 against Valencia and 3-0 against Athletic Bilbao in the Basque Derby.

La Real have been hot and cold on the road this season, collecting four points from nine on offer. They scored just two goals in their three away fixtures.

Atletico are a perfect three wins from three games at home in 2023-24. They outscored their three home opponents 9-4.

Simeone has a long list of injuries and suspended players, which includes Memphis Depay, Stefan Savic, Jose Gimenez, Pablo Barrios, Thomas Lemar, Caglar Soyuncu, and Reinildo Mandava. As it stands, all seven of those players are expected to miss the game due to their respective injuries.

Sociedad manager Alguacil could be without three players for the trip to the capital. Defender Alvaro Odriozola is a doubt due to physical discomfort. On-loan defender Kieran Tierney is out with a hamstring injury. Martin Merquelanz is out with a knee injury.

Atletico went unbeaten in their last four matches in all competitions against Real Sociedad. Last season’s game at the Metropolitano saw Atletico win 2-1.

Striker Alvaro Morata has five goals this season and could get on the scoresheet once more as Atleti win.

Los Rojiblancos should continue their winning streak against Sociedad by posting a 2-1 win.
