After 9 Goals Between City and Lezipig Last Season, They Meet Again on Wednesday

Just one season on from Manchester City’s biggest-ever Champions League victory over RB Leipzig, the reigning champions of Europe will head to Germany for their second group stage game of the season.
City’s demolition of Leipzig back in their run to the title last season saw Erling Haaland carry on his sensational goalscoring form against the German side, as he netted four times against them during his Borussia Dortmund days.
Stunningly, the Norwegian scored five goals in an 8-1 aggregate victory after a 1-1 draw back in Leipzig seemed to keep the tie open. Ilkay Gundogan also scored in the second half for the club, while Kevin De Bruyne scored in added time too.
City do, however, head into this game after two losses in a row for the first time in over a year, as Julian Alvarez scored in a 2-1 defeat away to Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend. City also fell to a 1-0 defeat in their first EFL Cup match, as Newcastle United ran out winners at St. James’ Park.
Alvarez was also amongst the goals in City’s first Champions League game of the season, scoring twice in the second half of a comeback win before Rodi netted a goal too. Rodri is also likely to be the first name on the teamsheet here, as is suspended for Premier League action and missed the Wolves game and is still out for the weekend’s fixture.
Despite the recent run, City are still top of the Premier League table by one point, having won six by scoring 17 goals and letting in just five. In reality, they are once again favourites for the Champions League title, so their recent blip is merely just that.
As for Leipzig, they fumbled a 2-0 lead at home to Bayern Munich over the weekend, as Lois Openda and Castello Lukeba scored a goal each in the first half. Openda has had a great start to life in Germany, scoring four times and putting together two assists for his new side already.
It keeps the club in fifth right now in the Bundesliga and Leipzig have also not suffered a defeat since a loss to the league leaders, Bayer Leverkusen, on opening weekend.
Back in the Champions League for Leipzig, they defeated Young Boys in Group G, as Mohamed Simakan scored a goal in the first half before Xaver Schlager and Benjamin Sesko scored a goal each.
