Newcastle United welcome Manchester City to St. James’ Park on Wednesday as both Premier League giants aim to book their place in the fourth round of the EFL Cup.

The two sides are separated by nine points in the Premier League table, with frontrunners Manchester City leading eighth-placed Newcastle.

Pep Guardiola’s side claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over the Magpies last month. Can Eddie Howe’s men exact their revenge this time around?

Newcastle head into Wednesday’s showdown on the back of a record-breaking victory over Sheffield United, who suffered an 8-0 defeat in their own backyard.

A record eight different players found the back of the net on Sunday, with the Magpies racking up 22 shots, while the Blades managed a solitary attempt on target.

As a result, Newcastle are currently enjoying a three-game unbeaten streak, with a 1-0 win against Brentford preceding a goalless draw with AC Milan in the Champions League.

Following a run of three straight defeats in the Premier League, it feels like Howe’s men have found their feet again, rekindling memories of last season.

On the flip side, Manchester City claimed a 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest last time out, although Rodri was sent off in the first minute of the second half.

Early goals from Phil Foden and Erling Haaland put City in control inside 14 minutes, but they failed to add to their tally as Forest grew into the contest.

Still, Guardiola’s side find themselves two points clear at the Premier League summit after taking maximum points from their opening six matches.

Not only have Man City scored 16 goals in six league outings this term (2.7 goals per game), but they have also conceded on just three occasions, keeping three clean sheets.

Head-to-head: Manchester City have avoided defeat in each of their last 10 meetings with Newcastle, chalking up eight wins and two draws in the process.

On top of that, City have scored 30 goals across their past 10 encounters with the Magpies (3 goals per game), notching seven clean sheets for good measure.

Team news: Newcastle will be without the injured quartet of Joelinton, Joe Willock, Harvey Barnes and Emil Krafth for the foreseeable future.

As for Man City, Rodri is suspended, while Kevin De Bruyne is injured. There are also question marks over the fitness of Bernardo Silva, John Stones and Mateo Kovacic.

Although Newcastle have discovered some form of late, Man City’s recent record against the Magpies is difficult to ignore.

For that reason, Forebet predicts that Man City to notch another victory over Newcastle on Wednesday, with the visitors scoring over 1.5 goals while keeping a clean sheet.
