Two Relegated Premier League Sides Set for a Classic With Southampton Hosting Leicester

Two of the relegated Premier League sides from last season meet at St. Mary’s this weekend with Southampton welcoming Leicester City.

A drop in form over the past few weeks has seen Southampton fall down into seventh, but they still sit just two points adrift of their former Premier League foes.

Back in the top flight last year, seven points separated the two sides with Southampton losing three more games and scoring 15 goals fewer.

A similar path is taking shape here, as Leicester have let in only four goals compared to the Saints' 12, while Southampton have won three games compared to the Foxes' four.

Prior to the international break, Southampton were dealt one of their worst-ever Championship defeats after a 5-0 smashing from Sunderland at the Stadium of Light to register the club's first loss of the season.

They have previously managed to beat Queens Park Rangers 2-1 and Plymouth Argyle by the same scoreline, where Che Adams and Adam Armstrong were amongst the goals once again.

Those two also got goals in the stunning 4-4 home draw with Norwich City, as Armstrong salvaged a point with a 97th-minute penalty after a goal in the first half and a finish from Adams in the second.

Nevertheless, despite the topsy-turvy form from the south coast outfit, they remain well on track for a spot in the playoffs heading towards the end of 2023, and they remain one of the highest scorers in the Championship right now.

As for Leicester, their 1-0 loss at home to Hull City was no doubt one of the upsets of the season, and with the club winning their first two EFL Cup games as well, it now means just one loss in all seven games so far.

Leicester have managed to beat Rotherham United, Huddersfield Town and Cardiff City in the past month as well, letting in just two goals in this time and scoring five of their own.

Further wins in the EFL Cup over Tranmere Rovers and Burton Albion have set up a third round clash with Liverpool at Anfield in two weeks.

The last time these two met in the Premier League last season, Southampton ran out 1-0 winners with a goal from Carlos Alcaraz. Forebet now predicts a win for Leicester and over 2.5 goals.
