Euro qualifying matchday No. 5 for Group F will take place on Tuesday. Sweden will host Austria in Solna, as they seek vital points in the race for Euro 2024 qualification.
Sweden will finish the international break in third place in Group F regardless of Tuesday’s results. The Swedes will start the match four points behind group leader Belgium.
The Belgians are on 10 points after 12 matches. Austria are level on points with Belgium but are second due to goal difference.
A win for Austria could see them move into first place in the group. A win would also put Austria into the driving seat for qualification.
A loss could see Sweden all but eliminated from qualification in Group F. The Swedes have disappointed in the group stage, winning two and losing two of four games.
Janne Andersson’s team could turn around their qualification campaign with a win at home.
Austria edged Sweden in their head-to-head meetings dating back to 1921. The Austrians posted a record of 19W-D-11L.
These teams met once in Euro 2024 qualification previously. In June, Austria posted a 2-0 win in Vienna. Midfielder Christoph Baumgartner scored twice in the final nine minutes to give Austria the victory.
Austria dominated the match statistically, posting 63% of the possession. The Austrians tallied a total of 21 shots to Sweden’s four. Thirteen of Austria’s 21 shots landed on target.
Manager Ralf Rangnick plays a 4-4-2 formation, with two strikers. Baumgartner, who scored twice in the previous meeting, played on the right wing.
Rangnick could rotate the side after Austria’s 1-1 draw with Moldova. Marko Arnautovic Baumgartner, and Xaver Schlager did not start the match but came on as substitutes. Rangnick likely wanted to save the trio for the Sweden game.
Sweden are fresh off a 5-0 win against Estonia in Euro 2024 qualifying. The Swedes tallied 19 shots, with 10 hitting the target against Estonia.
Austria will be a far more difficult opponent for the Swedes to face. Andersson will likely start Alexander Isak, Dejan Kulusevski, and Victor Lindelof.
Sweden’s Anthony Elanga withdrew from the side ahead of Tuesday’s match in Solna. Rangnick has a fully fit squad to face off with the Swedes.
Austria are on a three-game winning streak against Sweden in all competitions. They outscored the Swedes 8-1 across those three games. Austria are aiming for a 20th all-time win against Sweden. Can they pull off the victory?
