Iceland will be looking to end a run of three successive defeats in Group J when they host Bosnia-Herzegovina in Euro 2024 qualifying on Monday.
Having lost four of their five qualifiers so far, Iceland find themselves second from bottom in Group J – three points above Liechtenstein and three points behind Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Can the hosts revive their qualifying campaign? Or will the visitors heap more misery on Iceland? It’s time to take a closer look at the teams.
Let’s start with the hosts, Iceland, who suffered a 3-1 defeat to Luxembourg on Friday, despite racking up 57% possession and 12 shots.
After losing 3-0 to Bosnia-Herzegovina in their opening qualifier back in March, Iceland thrashed Liechtenstein 7-0, but it’s been all downhill since then.
Following a 2-1 defeat against Slovakia and a 1-0 loss to Portugal in June, Iceland head into Monday’s showdown on a three-game losing streak.
When you look at the bigger picture, Iceland have managed to win just one of their last eight games inside 90 minutes, losing five of their previous six outings.
As for Bosnia-Herzegovina, they kicked off their campaign with the win against Iceland before suffering three consecutive defeats.
In fact, Bosnia-Herzegovina failed to score a single goal across losses to Slovakia, Portugal and Luxembourg, conceding seven goals along the way.
However, the visitors managed to return to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over Liechtenstein on Friday, registering 76% possession and nine shots.
With five matches in the books and five to play, Bosnia-Herzegovina find themselves four points shy of the top two in Group J.
Head-to-head: Iceland and Bosnia-Herzegovina met for the very first time back in March, with Bosnia-Herzegovina winning the reverse fixture 3-0.
Team news: Burnley’s Johan Berg Gudmundsson will earn his 88th cap for Iceland on Monday, while 19-year-old Ajax midfielder Kristian Hlynsson could make his first international appearance.
On the flip side, Edin Dzeko has scored 65 goals in 130 games for Bosnia-Herzegovina, while Miralem Pjanic has made 111 appearances for his country.
Given that Iceland and Bosnia-Herzegovina will be eager to avoid defeat on Monday, we will likely see a close-fought battle as both sides bid to strengthen their qualification hopes.
With that in mind, Forebet predicts that Iceland and Bosnia-Herzegovina will play out a goalless draw on Monday.
