The Republic of Ireland will host the Netherlands in Dublin at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday for Euro 2024 qualification in Group B.
Group B is a difficult group, with several top-tier teams. France lead Group B after five wins from five matches.
The Irish are coming off a loss in Paris on Thursday night. The defeat damaged Ireland’s hopes of qualifying for another major tournament.
The Dutch were able to leapfrog Ireland in the standings on Thursday night thanks to a dominant win over Greece.
The Oranje had failed to live up to their potential in previous matches in Euro 2024 qualifying but are now second in the group.
Ronald Koeman’s team lost to France to start their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign 4-0.
The Dutch rebounded with a 3-0 victory over Gibraltar. On Thursday night, the Dutch defeated Greece 3-0.
The Republic of Ireland and the Netherlands met nine times dating back to 1982.
The Dutch dominated those nine matches, winning six games, drawing two, and losing one. These teams have not played since 2016 and that fixture finished 1-1.
Ireland failed to score against France in midweek, losing 2-0. They have scored just four times in four games in Euro 2024 qualifying.
The defence conceded five times in their opening four matches. Stephen Kenny’s team doesn’t have the quality of France or the Netherlands, but could still surprise Group B.
The Irish missed the 2020 Euro tournament. Their last European Championship was in 2016 in France.
Ireland reached just three previous European Championship tournaments. Major international tournament qualification isn’t common for Ireland.
The Netherlands finished fourth over the summer in the UEFA Nations League. It was the second time the Oranje reached the Nations League finals.
A loss to Croatia, 4-2, on penalties, was followed by a 3-2 loss to Italy in the third-place playoff.
Koeman struggled as Netherlands manager once taking over post-World Cup 2022.
However, the Netherlands are improving under his leadership. Against Greece, the Dutch won 3-0 thanks to goals from Cody Gakpo, Marten de Roon, and Wout Weghorst.
Barring any late injuries, Koeman will likely start the same XI against Ireland that faced Greece.
Weghorst started in attack along with Gakpo and Xavi Simons. Frenkie De Jong and De Roon played in midfield.
Ireland will likely struggle against the Netherlands’ quality. The Irish had just 32% against France to go along with six shots.
Ireland may have home-field advantage, but they should fall in the end against the Netherlands. The Dutch should keep their strong record in head-to-head matches versus Ireland going.
