England to edge Colombia in WWC quarterfinals
1681

England are the bookmakers’ favourite to win the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The Lionesses began the tournament as the third favourite to lift the trophy.

Now, ahead of their quarterfinal tie with Colombia, England are tipped to go all the way for the first time.

Sarina Wiegman’s team continues to go from strength to strength. England finished third and fourth at the 2015 and 2019 Women’s World Cups, respectively.

They followed up those performances by winning the European Championship in 2022.

After winning the European Championship, the Lionesses won the Women’s Finalissima, defeating Brazil on penalties following a 1-1 draw.

Hopes are high that the Lionesses can bring home a first-ever Women’s World Cup trophy.

Colombia are playing in their third Women’s World Cup. This is the first time the Colombians have reached the quarterfinals.

Their previous best performance was in 2015 when they reached the round of 16.

The teams have played just once previously, with the match taking place at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

England defeated Colombia 2-1 in the group stage, as they finished second in the group behind France. Colombia progressed to the round of 16 as one of the best third-place teams.

Colombia reached the quarterfinals thanks to a 2-0 win over South Korea and a 2-1 win against Germany in the group stage.

A loss to Morocco was a minor setback but didn’t prevent progression to the knockout stages. Colombia outlasted Jamaica in the round of 16.

The Powerpuff Girls are good at keeping games low scoring. They conceded just two goals in four games. England have struggled to score goals at times in the Women’s World Cup.

Yes, the Lionesses piled up six goals against China, one of the tournament’s worst teams. But the team scored just two additional goals in three fixtures.

England were fortunate against Nigeria. Playing a woman down, England were on the back foot for much of the game.

Lucy Bronze should have been whistled for a penalty late in the game, but VAR did not intervene. England picked up a nil-nil draw after 120 minutes and won 4-2 on penalties.

Lauren James, England’s breakout player in the tournament, will miss the quarterfinal match. She was sent off for standing on a Nigerian player.

It could be another nervy performance from the Lionesses. Three of their four games in the tournament finished with under 1.5 goals. England should win 1-0 and reach the semifinals to face Frace or Australia.
