Panathinaikos to finish off SK Dnipro-1 in UEFA CL second qualifying round

Panathinaikos take a 3-1 lead into their second qualifying round second-leg match against SK Dnipro-1 on Tuesday night in Greece.

Manager Ivan Jovanovic led Panathinaikos to second place in the Greek top flight last season just missing out on the title.

Dnipro must overcome their two-goal deficit if they want to have any chance of progressing to the third qualifying round.

Playing in Greece won’t be easy, as Panathinaikos will have a raucous crowd on hand.

The first-leg fixture was the only previous meeting between Panathinaikos and Dnipro.

The match nearly ended 3-0 in favour of Panathinaikos, but Dnipro’s Tanchyk Volodymyr scored in the 90th minute to give the Ukrainian club hope going into the second leg.

Volodymyr’s goal came after Andraz Sporar put Panathinaikos into the lead in the first half.

With 16 minutes left to play, Filip Djuricic doubled the lead. On 84 minutes, Panathinaikos added a third goal thanks to a Fotis Ioannidis penalty.

Despite the game ending 3-1 in Panathinaikos’ favour, Dnipro outshot the Greeks 8-7. Dnipro also tallied four shots on target to Panathinaikos’ three.

The game saw just one yellow card, which was handed out to Dnipro’s Oleksii Gutusuliak.

Panathinaikos have made several signings this summer, including Tonny Vilhena, Tin Jedvaj, Djuricic, and Zeca.

Jovanovic used an attacking 4-3-3 formation in the first leg versus Dnipro, with Sporar leading the line. Vilhena and Djuricic started the game as duel No 10s. There are no fresh injuries for Panathinaikos.

Dnipro defender Yamis Hamache will likely miss the match with an injury.

Midfielder Oleksandr Pikhalyonok is also nursing an injury and could miss the match.

Manager Oleksandr Kucher will use a 4-2-3-1 formation. In the first leg, he had Artem Dovbyk playing as the lone striker.

Kucher could make a change for the second leg, as Dnipro seek goals.

Due to the war in Ukraine, Dnipro have been forced to sign players from Ukraine for the new season.

The team has had quite a bit of turnover but only spent around €1.83 million in the transfer market.

Panathinaikos, on the other hand, spent around €3m in the transfer market.

Making the Champions League group stage would be a major financial boost for either team. The winner of this tie will face France’s Marseille in the third qualifying round.

Panathinaikos posted a 3-1 win in the first leg. It wasn’t a difficult victory and could have been 3-0 had it not been for a late Dnipro goal. Panathinaikos should finish off Dnipro with a 2-0 win at full-time to progress.
